Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) primarily affects postmenopausal women, causing gradual recession of the frontal hairline. As a form of scarring alopecia, it results from hair follicle destruction due to inflammatory or autoimmune disorders. This leads to permanent hair loss since follicles cannot regrow.

Clinical Presentation

Frontal fibrosing alopecia characteristically manifests as a symmetrical band of hair loss along the frontal hairline. The affected area often presents a smooth, shiny appearance, there is visible hair loss and scarring.

In addition to the frontal hairline, the temporal and occipital regions can also be involved.

Treatment

Currently there is no cure for FFA, treatment focuses on arresting disease progression and managing symptoms. A multidisciplinary approach, incorporating dermatologists, endocrinologist is necessary. This endeavor can be unproductive, frequently yielding unsatisfactory results. Scarring alopecia encompasses a group of hair loss disorders defined by permanent hair loss resulting from the destruction of the hair follicles and their subsequent replacement with scar tissue.
